A Happy Mouth is a Happy Life

On the dental calendar, the 20th day of March marks World Oral Health Day and the theme for 2026 is that “A Happy Mouth… is a Happy Life”, which aims to encourage positive change by educating people about the vital role a happy, healthy mouth plays in our lives.

This year’s theme reminds us that it is important to care for our mouths throughout our lifetime because our mouth supports our whole body and makes everyday moments brighter.

As a dentist, what comes to my mind when I read the theme, “A Happy Mouth… is a Happy Life”...?

My first question is, what does it mean to have a “Happy Life”? Because this can be different for each individual. A happy life may mean to some, making lots of money, or working in your dream job, or getting to travel and go on holidays regularly.

At this moment in time, what I think many of us take for granted is our health. Because without being healthy, how can we live a happy life?!

Good dental health, aka a “Happy Mouth”, is more than the absence of disease and tooth decay in your mouth. It is an integral part of your wellbeing.

There is a saying that if the eyes are a window to the soul, then the mouth is the doorway to the body.

Because the mouth is a primary gateway into the body, poor oral health can have negative consequences indirectly promoting other medical problems like cardiovascular diseases, respiratory infections, digestive problems and diabetic complications.

We all strive and make decisions to make ourselves happier in this life, but in order to enjoy, we should first ensure that we are in good health. And the best place to start is to get on top of your dental health. Because tooth pain means time off work and also limits what you can eat which as a result moves you away from good overall health.

So if you need another reason to make that overdue dental appointment, I hope I’ve convinced you to come in and visit us to help you achieve a Healthy Mouth for that Happy Life!
